Is Your Wheelchair Ergonomically Correct?

Is Your Wheelchair Ergonomically Correct? When your body is already suffering from mobility issues, the last thing a wheelchair should do is put any additional stress or strain on your tissues. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happens if you use a wheelchair that is ergonomically incorrect.

In public facilities especially, it seems too little consideration is given to the quality of the wheelchair provided to patrons who have trouble walking for an extended period of time. That’s why people respond so favorably to shopping malls and airports that use the STAXI wheelchair for their manual wheelchair and wheelchair rental needs, as well as hospitals that use the STAXI for transporting patients.

STAXI is the number one nestable transport chair system in the world. In development since 1985, the STAXI was designed by a team of patients, nurses, doctors, transporters, volunteers, researchers and engineers. It was 14 years later that STAXI really took off.

Engineer Andrew J. Hart was impressed with the STAXI’s revolutionary design. As the parent of a young man who was disabled after an auto accident, Hart knew firsthand the shortcomings of conventional wheelchair designs.
“My initial experience with wheelchairs was disappointing,” says Hart. “I couldn’t help but ask: Why do I have to hunch over to push a wheelchair? Why is a wheelchair’s seat so low? Why can’t the seat be a little higher so Julian can look a cashier in the eye when he’s buying something at a store? Why can’t I slide him from his wheelchair to another chair without lifting him up? Why do I have to ‘remember’ to apply the brake – isn’t safety a priority? Why is the brake in such an awkward place? Why is it so hard to push?”
In response, Hart jumped at the chance in 1999 to buy the patents to manufacture the STAXI so as to incorporate elements of design that were ergonomically correct, such as:

No-lift side patient transfer
Single handlebar for proper posture and one-hand operation
Adjustable armrests and footrests that require no bending
Automatic brake on the handlebar

“Julian’s goal is to walk and to run again,” says Hart of his son. “Until that day, I am going to do my part to ensure that Julian and people like him have access to good mobility products that enable them to live a full, meaningful life.”

Prevent Injuries With Medically-supervised Fitness Programs For All Fitness Levels

Prevent Injuries With Medically-supervised Fitness Programs For All Fitness LevelsThere’s nothing more frustrating about starting a new fitness routine than hurting yourself in the process. Suddenly the very thing that was supposed to improve your health is actually making it worse. Forced to focus on healing your injury, your progress stalls and so does your patience.

As Metabolic Wellness Centers of Mesa can attest, any number of factors may cause injury during a new fitness routine for Mesa weight loss, Mesa physical therapy, Mesa personal training, Gilbert occupational therapy or Gilbert physical therapy, like:

Failing to warm up your body
Doing more than your body is ready for
Using the wrong form during exercises

Fortunately, all of these risks are completely avoidable when you participate in a medically-supervised program that is appropriate for all fitness levels.

Customized Fitness Program

What works for someone else’s body will not necessarily work for yours, be it exercise or diet. In fact, the most ideal fitness program is one tailored to your unique needs. Your level of fitness should be factored into this customized program, as well as your goals. More importantly, it should factor in the potential risks associated with any health condition you may be living with, such as:

Repetitive strain injuries
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Vertigo
Heart disease
Spinal cord injury
Traumatic brain injury
Multiple sclerosis
Parkinson’s disease

Only a customized fitness program that takes all of these factors into consideration can effectively merge your unique needs with your goals.

One-On-One Professional Supervision

If you’re going to participate in a medically-supervised fitness program, you should expect one-on-one attention. Before getting started, you should receive a complete medical evaluation from an on-site physician. Then you should be able to expect regular one-on-one sessions with both a certified personal trainer and nutritionist.

Regular Check-Ins to Review Progress

Designing you a customized fitness program is only half the battle, the other half being a conscientious effort to monitor its success. After all, a medically-supervised fitness program means little without quantifiable results. In addition to your regular one-on-one sessions, regular check-ins to review your progress are essential to measure your success.

So if you want to avoid the injuries often associated with new fitness programs, consider the medically-supervised alternative – fitness programs recommended by professionals in the healthcare industry.

Through a free consultation, Metabolic Wellness Centers can provide you with the specifics involved in a medically-supervised fitness program – for Mesa personal training, Mesa physical therapy, Gilbert physical fitness, Gilbert occupational therapy and more.

Doctors Recommend Holistic Fitness And Nutrition Programs At Metabolic Wellness CentersThough holistic approaches to health have proven their effectiveness, support of these programs is sometimes lacking within the conventional healthcare community. That’s what makes the holistic fitness programs of Metabolic Wellness Centers of Mesa so unique. These programs are physician-recommended for a wide range of needs among East Valley residents, including Gilbert weight loss, Gilbert physical therapy, Gilbert personal training, Mesa occupational therapy and Mesa physical fitness.

10 Ways Caregivers Can Take Better Care Of Themselves

10 Ways Caregivers Can Take Better Care Of ThemselvesThough caring for a loved one in need can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life, it can also be one of the most challenging. That is certainly the case for those who seek help from Synergy HomeCare of Texas. As a leader in the assisted living industry – from senior services and respite care, to personal care and companionship – Synergy has seen firsthand how in home care can take a devastating toll on primary caregivers.

If you are a primary caregiver, do yourself and your loved ones a favor. Follow these 10 ways that you can take better care of yourself:

  1. Ask for help. Much of the stress associated with caregiving stems from the fear that you’re not doing all you can to help, or that what you are doing is wrong. So the more help you can get from a professional caregiver through an organization like Synergy, the easier – and more rewarding – your own caregiving responsibilities will be.

  2. Give yourself a break. When you devote most of your time to the care of someone else, it’s easy to forget yourself. In fact, it’s the most common mistake among primary caregivers – sacrificing your own needs in order to meet someone else’s. Inevitably, burnout sets in. Not only do you suffer the consequences, but the quality of care you’re providing suffers too. So it is absolutely essential that you set aside time each day to address your own physical, mental and emotional needs. Respite care can be arranged through an organization like Synergy so that a trusted caregiver can be with your loved one while you are away.

  3. Find a support system. Whether it’s a formal support group for primary caregivers, or an informal group of friends and family, you need people to talk with about how you’re feeling. Formal support groups are often ideal as they are filled with people going through the same thing, meaning you need not censor yourself for fear that they may not understand your feelings of guilt or resentment.

  4. Get plenty of exercise. Not only is it a stress-reliever, but also an energizer. Incorporate three or four workouts into your weekly routine – be it walking, running or swimming laps in the pool – and you’ll find yourself feeling more balanced, relaxed and refreshed.

  5. Eat healthy meals. You know how important nutrition is to the loved one you’re caring for. Well it’s equally important to you, as eating too little or settling for fatty fast foods will only leave you feeling unsatisfied and depleted. A balanced diet is critical to maintaining the level of energy you need to take care of your loved one and yourself.

  6. Find a fun activity. When you’re caring for a loved one, simply surviving isn’t enough. You need to thrive – doing things you love instead of putting your life on hold. Whether it’s a hobby you’ve had for years, or something new you’ve always wanted to try, find something to do that’s creative, rewarding and fun.

  7. Organize your priorities. Just because you’re the primary caregiver of a loved one should in no way imply that everything else in your life must take a backseat. On the contrary, your job, finances, spouse and children need and deserve your attention too.

  8. Learn to manage your stress. Physically, mentally and emotionally, stress can take its toll, manifesting itself through a wide range of symptoms, including headache, back pain, sleeping problems, anxiety, mood swings, overeating, undereating, excessive drinking and social withdrawal. To prevent or alleviate symptoms of stress, incorporate relaxing activities into your life, be it a hot bath, long walk, good book, meditation or massage.

  9. Watch for signs of depression. Far too common among caregivers, depression can be a debilitating condition that affects every aspect of your life. Signs of depression may include those associated with stress, as well as feelings of hopelessness and self-loathing, and thoughts of suicide. So watch for these signs and, if you suspect you are depressed, seek help immediately – if not from a professional therapist, then from a support group or trusted loved one.

  10. Stop feeling guilty. No matter how hard you try, you cannot do everything. And that’s okay, or at least it should be. Unfortunately, primary caregivers often beat themselves up for not being perfect, further compounding the stress that can lead to depression and physical illness.

The Importance Of Support Groups For Military Families

The Importance Of Support Groups For Military FamiliesAccording to the Department of Defense , all four branches of the service in February 2008 marked their eighth straight month of successful active duty recruiting, meeting or exceeding their recruitment goals. With over 150,000 troops currently deployed in the Middle East, and without a foreseeable end to military operations in sight, hundreds of thousands of military families in the United States are feeling the effects of separation. There has been an increased demand for information for these families, including information for a military loan, military pay, military education  and military enlistment information.  Clearly, a support network of resources for these growing numbers of servicemen and women and their families is a critical need, both present and future. Cognizant of this need, and proudly making it their mission to make this information readily available, MilitaryConnection.com serves all branches of the active military including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Reserves, as well as veterans, retirees, DoD civil servants and their families. MilitaryConnection.com is a comprehensive online directory that focuses on government jobs and civilian jobs, as well as a cornucopia of additional benefits.

Deployment of a military spouse in any branch of service - be it the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Reserves - at war in Afghanistan or Iraq, takes its toll. There are many issues that service members and their spouses may face that are unique to them as a group, which may be alleviated and eased to some degree through support groups, networking and online directories. Financial problems often hamper countless military families during times of deployment, placing unexpected burdens on loved ones left behind with bills and other expenses. The mobile lifestyle that a military family has can be extremely difficult at times, particularly during periods of relocation. This can be especially difficult for children who are continually required to adjust to new friends, schools and homes. It is difficult for any family member to watch a significant other board a transport plane for a tour of duty. The much anticipated homecoming from deployment after the months and years of waiting may be filled with excitement and relief. But they may also filled with stress, uncertainty, concern, and distance from one another. The reintegration process following homecoming involves taking time for the veteran, family and friends to become reacquainted. This is a time to talk and listen to one another, and to restore trust, support and closeness. Some service members have difficulties, and struggle with their transition back home. They need to take advantage of support groups, networking and resources that are available to them.

There will be common problems and struggles faced by the military men and women who are proudly serving our country. But the good news is that there are a lot of resources and information to support them. It is increasingly clear that with the widespread availability of information available through the internet, these adjustments can be easier. MilitaryConnection.com is an online directory of military resources with over 10,000 pages of relevant information designed to serve all branches of the active military. MilitaryConnection.com contains leads for thousands of different military, government, federal and civilian jobs, directories of employers with numerous participants and virtual job fairs and job postings, education information including military schools, military education and federal schools, and tools such as military pay charts, salary and military pay calculators. The list goes on and on! MilitaryConnection.com provides a great tool for developing the essential qualities for a successful life for servicemen and women, both during and after the military, and looks forward to serving you!
